Gypsy Girl

La Gitanita y su Gato (2013)

This artwork was done after watching a documentary about gypsies in the computer. The girl as well as the cat were drawn from my imagination and were not sketch in the canvas for I wanted for the painting to reflect sincerity. The painting for me is a reflection on the sublime moment when a child smiles. Like Renoir I tend to be drawn to subjects which are enjoyable to look at yet I'm not an idealist in the sense that I don't strive for perfection but rather find in the most overlooked subjects the purity of expression.
The reason for my interest in the gypsy culture of Spain lies on their ability to turn a simple anecdote or historical event into something of relevance and importance through their use of highly elaborate flamenco voices. For a moment one is transported and liberated from the world that time stands still for a moment.

Maiko Painting

Maiko Prayer - Jose Quijivix (2014-15)

This is an oil painting about the commitment of a maiko to live a life of service. She prays with a pink tulip on her hands as a symbol of recovery. She is recovering from the ailments of the modern world and going back to her roots. The columnar wooden piece reads peace in japanese and is placed as the thing being worshiped for the maiko needs peace within to perform. The painting can also be interpreted as a mourning maiko, praying for the recovery of peace.

Picasso Study - Jose Quijivix (2013)

A major influence in my artwork is Picasso because of his bold brushstrokes and vivid colors. The purpose for this study was to delve deeper into his creative process. This is not merely a copy but a whole new artwork executed with Picasso's techniques.

Native Expression

Indigena - Jose Quijivix (2014)

The girl depicted here is from a photograph from the collection of the Bank of America that was displayed in a Latin American  museum. What struck me the most was her piercing gaze looking out beyond her 2-D world. Her shirt was inspired by the traditional patterns displayed on the clothes of indigenous people living in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. The Bindi can be seen in most of my work because it gives the subject a uniqueness which separates them from the rest.

Pastel Girl

In a recent artwork I started experimenting with color.
My work is seldom planned for I strive to develop an aesthetic that communicates flow.
The contrast of the paper with the vivid colors appealed to me once I was done.
My art is completely dominated by women for I believe they project a more complex form with which to model and experiment. In other words, women are more interesting to study.
